CAVES OF DRACH AND HAMSOn the East Coast near to Porto Cristo are the caves of Drach and Hams; both systems containing fantastic stalactite and stalagmite formations. The caves are open to the public all the year round. A tour of the larger Drach caves culminates in an illuminated boat trip across a vast underground lake accompanied by a small orchestra complete with singers! Hams caves have been more recently opened, and, though smaller, are still very impressive and well worth a visit. Inside the caves it is very cool, so if one visits in high summer dressed only in shorts and a vest expect the shivers and goose bumps - ah bliss! |

EAST COASTAlong the whole of the East Coast are coves of all descriptions. Some, like Calas de Mallorca, are developed with hotels, restaurants and other facilities. Others, like Cala Santanyi, have plenty of sand, while others have a tiny beach at the head of a deep cove. Some are fishing ports, like Cala Figuera and Porto Colom; others, reached by dusty unsurfaced tracks, can be enjoyed almost in solitude. Particularly attractive is Porto Cristo standing at the end of a long, sheltered creek. It is a small fishing port with a number of restaurants overlooking the harbour. Nearby are two small beaches. It is very popular with day-trippers. About 5 kms north of Porto Cristo is the Auto Safari, game reserve with rhinos and monkeys etc. Cala Santanyi
